The overall goal of Phase 2 is to conduct a series of coordinated high-variability training studies in second language pronunciation that build directly on the Phase 1 database. Phase 2 is open both to teams that participated in Phase 1 and to new teams joining the project for the first time. As in Phase 1, participating teams will adhere to a shared basic training design (e.g., the amount of training administered and the number of talkers included), while remaining free to make other site-level decisions. This structure allows methods to be coordinated across studies and lowers the barriers to participation for teams who may not otherwise have the resources to conduct training studies independently. For their Phase 2 training, teams will draw on one or more stimulus sets developed in Phase 1 — whether these sets were developed by their own team, by another Phase 1 team, or simply made available to a team joining in Phase 2 — removing the time and cost of collecting, processing, and validating materials independently, and ensuring that all teams train with materials developed under shared methodological parameters.
